Crew Change in Egypt: Ports, Airports, Visas & Documents

Crew changes rarely fail on the big things. They fail on a visa that wasn't ready, a launch that missed its window, or a crew member held at immigration. Egypt is a strong crew-change hub, Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts, three usable international airports and a mature agency network, but only if the details are handled before the crew move.
The three airports that matter
Most crew movements in Egypt route through one of three gateways, chosen by which coast the vessel is on:
- Cairo (CAI), the main international hub with the widest connections; the usual entry point for most nationalities.
- Alexandria, Borg El Arab (HBE), closest to Mediterranean port calls at Alexandria, Dekheila and El Amriya, cutting road transfer time.
- Hurghada (HRG), the Red Sea gateway for Gulf of Suez and Ras Ghareb operations, avoiding a long overland leg from Cairo.
Visas and immigration, plan by nationality
Immigration handling depends on the seafarer's nationality, the documents they carry and whether they are joining or leaving. A valid Seaman's Book and a letter of guarantee from the local agent cover many cases, but some nationalities need a visa arranged in advance. Getting this wrong is the most common cause of a held crew member, so nationalities and document status should be shared with the agent early, not on arrival.
Meet-and-assist inside the terminal
For sign-on and sign-off crews, meet-and-assist at the airport smooths immigration and customs and keeps the movement on schedule. Combined with hotels, ground transport and launch transfers, the entire cycle, airport to vessel, or vessel to airport, can run under one plan, so a change in itinerary doesn't mean re-briefing three different suppliers.
